„To paint the town red on my 80th, to be on tour and have a ball with my fans – that would be the best!” (James Last).
Good news for all James Last fans: his wish will come true for him and for all of us!
Just before his 79th birthday, James Last and his tour promoter Semmel Concerts GmbH announce the launch of „With 80 years around the world“. The unique and unsurpassed journey of the most successful band leader of all times across the world’s stages continues in April 2009!
In an interview, the 78-year-old emphasized that he coped easily with the past tours. “I enjoyed them tremendously. Whoever knows me knows that I want to make music – also on stage – as long as I can! If you have made music for as long as I have, you simply cannot stop. Being on stage is happiness for me – and I pass on a tiny bit of that happiness. I am very grateful that I am in such good health and that I can still fill so many people with enthusiasm”, Last said.
And he surely said so with his most recent, immensely successful tours in mind. In 2006, James Last gave over 30 concerts, and in 2007 the bandleader was on tour mainly in England. Three the 14 concerts there took place at the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London, where he had 85 concerts altogether so far. This is a world record! And this is why he was particularly glad that the concert and the atmosphere were recorded live there. The DVD and CD „James Last live at Royal Albert Hall“ will be published on time for his birthday and the start of the advance sales of his tour in April 2008. A unique commemoration exactly 30 years after his first performance at the Royal Albert Hall back in 1978.
There will be 23 concerts for his 80th birthday:
Warm-up in Bayreuth – and then it’s non-stop dancing
In spring 2009 the countdown will begin. An entirely new production will be rehearsed in Bayreuth, and Bayreuth is also the venue of the first public performance on April 23rd. From then on the trek will pass through 22 cities of the continent, with concerts in the largest halls. Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and Belgium will certainly be included in the itinerary.
After the summer break, the tour will continue in autumn 2009 in England and Skandinavia. James Last regards the countless requests for concerts from all over the world as an honour and wonderful challenge. It may therefore well be that autumn 2009 will hold a surprise or two.
It is a precious gift for James Last, the perfectionist, to be able to go on stage with “his large family”, the band, in the big way with a new production.
He wants to make music as long as he lives, of this the Lord of band leaders is certain. Yet he says he is more consciously enjoying life today, knowing it may all be over very quickly.
“With 80 years around the world” will be a unique journey of great enjoyment, excitement, adventure – and a guaranteed open end…
Advance sales for this very special present on his milestone birthday will start on his 79th birthday – on April 17th, 2008.
The party goes on!

James Last - "My Autobiography"
It was a simple idea, but it made James Last, born Hans Last in Germany in 1929, hugely successful. He came up with the idea of arranging chart hits in an accessible, big band style and found a massive audience for what turned into an astonishing series of records down the years. In a career stretching back decades he has sold over 100 million albums with more than 190 releases. Having showed great promise as a child, James joined a dance orchestra in 1946 when he was just 17, was voted best bassist in Germany three years running and west on to become the in-house arranger for Ploydor Records. His first album set the tone, as 1965's Non-Stop Dancing featured a medley of popular chart numbers linked by an infectious dance beat and atmospheric audience sounds. With his years of experience in the business, he knew exactly how to shape his sound and was shrewd enough to spot that there was a gap in the market for this kind of unpretentious party music. Not only was he right, but ut made him a superstar of the big world. But it hasn't always been easy. Though he is fantastically popular, James has always been music's best-kept secret. Even with all those albums and trademark cover versions selling so well, he's only had two hit singles. It hasn't stopped him winning awards, including Billboard's 'Star of the Year' gong in 1976 and he won a German Echo prize in 1994. And he has loyal fans who will go and see him wherever and whenever he plays. Now with homes in both Florida and Germany, he spends time with his much-loved family and continues to keep his millions of fans happy with his unique brand of music. Read the whole story in his Autobiography.
